Master Test Plan
A practical guide to creating a Master Test Plan that explains decisions as well as activities.
Definition
A Master Test Plan is a decision document. It should connect product scope, risk, strategy, effort, governance and residual risk in a form stakeholders can review.
A practical method
-
01
Start from agreed product scope and product risk decisions.
-
02
Describe the strategy, including depth and limitations, in a way that relates to those decisions.
-
03
Show the effort, budget and planning assumptions behind the approach.
-
04
Keep ownership, review moments and residual risk visible as the project evolves.
Worked example: Commerce Platform payment upgrade
Input: the fictional Commerce Platform payment upgrade keeps the existing product in view and adds two payment components. Basic test levels and ISO 25010:2011 qualities structure the plan; inherited risks and project-specific regression choices remain visible.
Plan extract: payment Functionality at System level has likelihood 3, impact 5, score 15 and Class A. The selected depth is Deep (3), and its component-quality estimate is 18 hours. This row explains both the priority and its effort consequence.
Project result: component-quality estimates total 279.4 hours. With activity allocations and overhead, the plan totals 321.3 hours and €25,704.80 against a €25,000 budget cap. The €704.80 overrun needs a decision about capacity, scope or budget; it does not justify silently reducing the risk rating.
Next step: review the assembled Master Test Plan in the Free workspace. Pro adds generated Word export. The free public Word template is a separate guided document you fill in yourself; it is not an export of this example.
Common mistakes
Listing activities without a clear rationale.
Publishing a plan once and never revisiting changed assumptions.
How RiskRover applies this method
RiskRover is designed to turn the planning chain into a professional Master Test Plan without losing the reasoning behind it.
Apply the planning workflow to your own project on Free, as one user.
Connect the next planning decision
Follow the reasoning from product risk to a test plan you can explain.
Product Risk Analysis
Agree which failures matter and record the reasoning behind their risk ratings.
How much testing is enough?
Weigh the available evidence, capacity and residual risk before a release decision.
